Rug Sizes That Actually Fit, Room by Room
Living room, bedroom, dining room, entry: which rug size fits, how to measure for it, and what each size costs in the rugs we sell, from $49 to $279.

The most common rug mistake is not the colour or the pattern. It is buying one size too small, putting it in the middle of the room, and having it float there like a bath mat. The second most common mistake is the fix for the first one: buying so big that it runs under the baseboards.
Here is how to get the size right in each room, and what those sizes cost in the rugs we actually stock.
First, the sizes we sell
Rug sizes are not standard across makers, so we go by the exact variant on each listing. The sizes that come up most often in our range are:
- Small: 2' x 3', 2'7" x 4', 3'6" x 5'6"
- Medium: 5' x 7'6", 5'3" x 7', 5'3" x 7'3", 6' x 9', 6'7" x 9'
- Large: 7'10" x 10', 8' x 10', 8'10" x 12', 9' x 12', 9'3" x 12'
- Very large: 10' x 14', 12' x 15'
- Round: 5'3", 6'7", 7'10"
- Runners: 2'7" x 7'3", 2'6" x 8', 2'7" x 10', 2'7" x 12'
Price scales with size, and steeply. One washable rug, the Cabacungan, runs $119 at 5'3" x 7', $159 at 6'7" x 9', $189 at 7'10" x 10' and $279 at 9'3" x 12'. The Gravelbourg washable boho rug is $89, $149, $179 and $259 across the same four sizes. Same rug, same colour — the size is the whole price difference.
Living room
The general rule: the front legs of every seat sit on the rug. Sofa, both chairs, all of them. A rug that only reaches the coffee table is the floating bath mat.
How to measure: put the furniture where it is going to live. Measure from the back of the front legs of the sofa to the back of the front legs of the furthest chair. That is the minimum rug depth. The width should run past the sofa at both ends by a few inches at least.
For most living rooms that lands at 7'10" x 10' or 8' x 10', and for a larger room with seating on three sides, 8'10" x 12' or 9' x 12'. The Azra tasseled jute and wool rug (currently on clearance) is $219 at 8' x 10' and $259 at 8'10" x 12', which is about as far as a clearance rug goes.
The floor you leave: somewhere between 6 and 18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls looks intentional. Less than that and it reads as wall-to-wall carpet that shrank.
Bedroom
The general rule: the rug goes under the bed and extends past the sides so your feet land on it when you get up. Extending 18 to 24 inches beyond each side of the mattress is the usual target.
Queen bed (60" wide): a rug 8 feet wide gives you about 18 inches each side. 8' x 10' or 7'10" x 10', run sideways under the bed so the length goes across the room.
King bed (76" wide): 9' x 12' or 8'10" x 12' for the same coverage.
The nightstand question: the rug either goes under the nightstands too, or stops just in front of them. Straddling them halfway is the one version that looks wrong. Decide, then measure.
A cheaper alternative that works: two runners, one down each side of the bed, instead of one large rug. The Baltinglass flat-pile washable runner is $79 at 2'7" x 7'3" — two of them for $158 covers where your feet land without buying the space under the bed that nobody sees.
Dining room
The general rule: the rug has to be big enough that a chair pulled out to sit down is still on it. That means the table's footprint plus about 24 inches on every side.
How to measure: table length plus 48 inches, by table width plus 48 inches. A 72" x 40" six-seat table needs roughly 10' x 7'4" — so 7'10" x 10' is the practical minimum, and 8'10" x 12' if the chairs are large.
Flat or low pile is worth choosing here. Chairs drag, and a thick pile fights them. The washable flat-pile rugs are built for exactly this.
Entry and hallway
Entry: a 2' x 3' or 2'7" x 4' inside the door. The Azra jute and wool is $49 at 2' x 3'. Choose something that can take dirt — again, the washable rugs earn their keep at the front door.
Hallway: a runner, sized to leave 4 to 5 inches of floor on each side and a few inches at each end. We have a separate guide to measuring for runners; the short version is measure the hall, subtract, and pick the nearest size down.
Round rugs
A round rug belongs under a round table, in a reading corner, or in a room where every other line is straight and something needs to break it. The 6'7" round is the most common size in our range — the Cabacungan is $129 in it — and the 7'10" round works under a four-seat round dining table using the same 24-inch rule.
Before you order
- Measure the furniture, not the room. The room's dimensions tell you the maximum; the furniture tells you the size.
- Read the variant title. A "6'7" x 9'" is not an "8' x 10'" and the price difference is real.
- Returns: 14 days from receipt, in original condition and packaging — see our refund policy. Clearance items are sale items and are not returnable, so measure twice on those.
- Delivery: every rug ships from the maker. Delivery estimates appear at checkout and are estimates. Our shipping policy explains how that works.
If you have the furniture measurements and are not sure which size they point to, email sales@stationhomedesign.com with the numbers and the rug you are looking at. We will tell you the size — and if the honest answer is the smaller, cheaper one, that is what we will say.
