What "Machine Washable Rug" Really Means

Which of our rugs are washable, what the listing spec actually says, which sizes fit a home washer, and how to wash one without wrecking it. From $59.

"Washable" is on the front of the listing for a reason: it is the thing people want most from a rug that lives near a door, a dog, or a toddler. It is also a word that gets used loosely, so here is exactly what it means on the rugs we sell, which sizes actually fit in a washing machine, and how to wash one so it comes out the same shape it went in.

What the listing actually says

Our washable rugs come from one maker, and the spec block on each listing is the same format. The Middlestown, for example, reads:

  • Construction: machine woven
  • Material: face 100% polyester
  • Pile: no pile
  • Machine washable: yes
  • Thickness: 0.16"
  • Made in: Turkey

Three of those lines are the reason it can go in a washer.

No pile means the surface is a flat weave, not tufted loops or cut fibres. There is nothing to mat, crush or shed when it is wet and spun.

100% polyester means the fibre does not absorb water the way wool or cotton does, so the rug is light when wet, dries fast, and does not shrink or felt.

0.16 inches thick means it folds. A rug this thin goes into a drum; a half-inch tufted rug does not, whatever the label says.

If a listing does not have "Machine washable: yes" in the spec block, it is not a washable rug, however easy the fibre sounds to clean.

The sizes and the prices

Every washable rug we stock comes in the same run of sizes, and the price follows the size:

Size Gravelbourg Cabacungan Baltinglass
2'7" x 7'3" runner $59 $69 $79
5'3" x 7' $89 $119 $139 (5'3" x 7'3")
6'7" round $139 $129 —
6'7" x 9' $149 $159 $189
7'10" x 10' $179 $189 —
9'3" x 12' $259 $279 —

The Baltinglass also comes as longer runners — 2'7" x 10' and 2'7" x 12', both $89 — which is the size to look at for a long hallway. The Joppatowne and the clearance Cabacungan are the same construction at clearance prices, $59 to $199; clearance items are sale items and are not returnable, so measure first on those.

Which sizes fit a washing machine

This is the part the word "washable" skips over.

General guidance: a runner or a 5'3" x 7' folded in half and rolled fits a standard large-capacity home washer. A 6'7" x 9' is at the edge — it fits a large front-loader, and it is a full load on its own. Anything 7'10" x 10' or bigger is a laundromat job, on a commercial front-loader, or a hose-and-brush job on the driveway.

The honest way to check is your washer's rated capacity against the rug's weight, which is on the listing. A rug that has to be forced into the drum is a rug that will not rinse properly and a washer that will walk across the floor on the spin.

If the plan is "wash it every month," buy the size that fits your machine, which usually means a runner or a 5'3" x 7', and use two of them rather than one big one.

How to wash it

The care note on the listing is the authority; where it is silent, this is the general routine for a polyester flat-weave rug:

  1. Shake or vacuum first. Grit in the wash abrades the weave.
  2. Fold it pile-side in, then roll loosely. Folded is how it goes in the drum, not stuffed.
  3. Cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent. No bleach, no fabric softener — softener coats polyester and makes it slippery.
  4. Wash it alone. No towels, no other rugs; the load balance matters more on a spin than the company does.
  5. Air dry flat or over a rail. A low tumble is usually tolerated on polyester, but flat drying is the way to keep the edges square. Do not put it away damp.

Expect it to lie a little wavy for a day afterwards. Flat-weave rugs relax back under their own weight; if it still curls at a corner after two days, put a book on it overnight.

The one thing washable rugs are bad at

They slide. A 0.16-inch flat polyester rug on a hard floor moves when you walk on it, and every washable rug needs a non-slip pad underneath. The pad is a separate purchase from any hardware store — buy it a few inches smaller than the rug in each direction so it does not show.

The pad also stays down while the rug goes in the wash, which is the workflow: rug off, rug washed, rug back on the pad.

Where they earn their keep

The front door, the mudroom, under the kitchen table, the hallway the dog uses, the bathroom, the playroom. Anywhere the alternative is a rug that goes to a cleaner twice a year and looks tired in between.

Where they do not: a formal living room where you want depth underfoot. No pile is no pile. For that room, look at the wool and jute rugs in the same collection, and plan on vacuuming rather than washing.
